CHURCH ORGANIZATIONS

At Lincoln Temple, we strive to reach out to our members and into the community through various organizations.  Below is a description that will inform you of the mission of each organization.

BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

The mission of the Board of Christian Education is to promote Christian understanding and living.  They develop activities designed to stimulate, interest and educate participants, as well as attract parents.

BOARD OF CHRISTIAN SOCIAL ACTION

The Board of Christian Social Action has a task of continuing program of research, education, and action on social justice issues, thus enabling this Church to speak prophetically whether locally, nationally or internationally on matters of justice, power, and public policy.  They have assured that as many D.C. residents as possible would have an opportunity to participate in the elections, the Board chairman works with the director of the Shaw Community Ministries to help Lincoln Westmoreland Apartment complex residents become registered voters.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Board of Trustees is responsible for maintaining the church property and the financial affairs of the Church.  The Board has no power to buy or sell real property without the majority vote of the Church membership.

 CHURCH COUNCIL

Under the leadership of the Moderator, The Church Council shall envision the mission of the Church, advise and cooperate with the Senior pastor on formulating and direction of a well-rounded Church program.   The membership consists of duly elected Church officers, chairpersons of Church boards and three Church members elected at large.

DIACONATE

The Diaconate is dedicated in assisting with the preparation and administration of the sacraments; in caring for the poor, the sick, the sorrowing and the stranger; and in ministering to the spiritual interests of the Church and community.

FRIENDLY CIRCLE

The Friendly Circle is the outgrowth of a 1950's suggestion that a Northeast couples club be formed. Drawing from a list of Lincoln members of Northeast and Southeast Washington, this club was organized in September of 1950.  The purposes of the club are to know the fellow members of our immediate neighborhoods; to welcome new members into our church; to make non-members feel so at home, they want to become a part of us; and to help the church financially in whatever way possible.  Our very first project was the installation of an electric drinking fountain in the church. Since then we have successfully sponsored many projects as well as made financial contributions to the church.

HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE

The Hospitality Committee was organized to host the social functions of the church and to assist the Diaconate with the repast of our deceased members.  We host a fellowship hour on the 4th Sunday of each month, unless other activities are scheduled.

LINCOLN REPORTER

The Lincoln Reporter is the newsletter for the members and friends of Lincoln Congregational Temple UCC.  It is published to inform EVERYONE about news and events at Lincoln, in the UCC and in the larger community.  Published every other month except in the summer, it is mailed to our sick and shut-in members and to friends across the country.

LINCOLN/WESTMORELAND BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Lincoln Westmoreland Housing Corporation, Inc. was created in the late 1960's by members of Lincoln Congregational Temple UCC and the Westmoreland Congregational UCC, to respond to the need for quality affordable housing for families living in the Shaw neighborhood.  There are nine board members nominated from each church.  Lincoln Westmoreland Apartments I, consisting of 108 apartments financed through the HUD Section 236 Program, were dedicated in 1971.

 MEN'S CLUB

Years ago men of Lincoln Congregational Temple came together to form the Men's Club of Lincoln.  Their mission is to work in the Shaw Community sharing the word of God.  All men are welcome to join them as they strive to carry out God's will.

SOCIAL BUILDERS CLUB

The Social Builders Club of Lincoln Congregational Temple United Church of Christ endeavors to promote Christian and spiritual living; to accept the cost and joy of discipleship and to be His servants in the service of humanity.  The year 2006 is the Club's 55th year of service.   Community outreach is a vital part of our Christian endeavor, for example: The Shaw Community Ministry, an adopted family, the Central Atlantic Conference and Howard University School of Divinity Pillar of Faith are some of our outreach activities.  In addition, generous annual financial donations are made to Lincoln.  Whenever called upon, we answer the call, if possible.  It is with heartfelt gratitude that we acknowledge the assistance and benevolence of the entire Lincoln Temple Family and other friends.  Currently, the club President is David L. Douglass.

SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE

The Special Events Committee was organized in September of 1997, to present in concert distinguished musical talent of the Washington metropolitan area.  The primary focus has been to present "3rd Sunday at 3p.m." concerts by vocalists and instrumentalists.  The concerts (which are free) are held in the fall and spring.

WOMEN'S FELLOWSHIP

The Women's Fellowship was organized in 1881 as a viable organization fostering evangelism and spiritual growth, stewardship and Christian fellowship.  With the exception of June, July and August, we meet monthly at 12 noon on the first Saturday.  We have lively meetings where we exchange meaningful dialogue, discuss outreach and mission, plan programs and activities and encourage others to share and embrace in fellowship and worship with us.   The women of this church are automatically members by virtue of being the women of Lincoln Temple UCC.  However, we welcome everyone - men and women to participate in lifting up our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
